Meet the maker! NOKI & Co.

The March featured spirit is packed with Irish charm and charisma. We cornered the NOKI & Co. team and got the lowdown on this world class spirit.

 

Undrunk Team: Why did you get into the alcohol-free business?

NOKI & Co.: I have been involved in the drinks industry for many years and have always been passionate about new product development. I was aware of the fact that more and more consumers were reducing their alcohol intake and looking for healthier options. In Ireland we have a reputation as a nation of drinkers but actually alcohol consumption has been in steady decline here for many years. When we launched Noki & Co. there were very few tasty & sophisticated options for non drinkers.

 

UT: What was the story behind the name Noki & Co.?

N&C: Noki & Co. is a play on 'No is Key!' as being Non alcoholic is key to what we are all about! The & Co. comes from our plans to collaborate with artists and designers and other alcohol free producers who share our philosophy for great products and creativity.

 

UT: Do you still have your first ever still? Did you name it?

N&C: All the stills in the distillery are named after the female members of the family - The still that we make our Juniper edition in is called 'Bella' after our eldest daughter Isabella.

 

UT: What was the inspiration behind the flavour choices for the Juniper Edition?

N&C: Without sounding too obvious our Juniper Edition was created to champion the essence of Gin which of course is Juniper! This special berry has enticing notes of pine and is the backbone of all great gins. We also wanted to complement the juniper profile with some lovely citrus notes (that you would also expect to find in a great G&T) so we added lemon verbena and grapefruit along with other complimentary botanicals. It took us over 70 attempts to perfect this recipe!

 

UT: What can people expect when they take their first sip of the Juniper Edition?

N&C: We hope people enjoy a sophisticated and refreshing alcohol free G&T experience. The citrus notes are quite forward and the juniper and quinine from the tonic we believe provide an excellent balance.

 

UT: How do you relax after a long day in the office?

N&C: To unwind after a busy day I like to listen to a good podcast on the way home, I am currently brushing up on my French so I am listening to some French podcasts, hopefully we can all start to travel again this year and France is a market that we are looking to expand into in 2022!

I love spring and can't wait to enjoy a Noki & Co. pink G&T in the garden once the evenings get a little bit longer and warmer!

 

UT: What's next on the cards for Noki & Co.?

N&C: We have lots of exciting plans ahead, firstly we are launching a pink 'Juniper Edition' in time for spring (we already have our pre-mixed pink G&T but this will be in the 500ml format for mixing at home or in a bar!). We are also looking to launch our pre-mixed drinks in cans to cater for the on the go market, travel retail, airlines etc. Watch this space!
